We got up early, as the sun rises early and sets later
here. We were able to catch the 8:30
boat over to the island. We could have
taken the first boat, but had to pay for our camp site at 8. The boat ride takes 16 minutes, and we
received both a campground and military discount, but the cost was still $52
for both of us roundtrip including the surcharge for taking our own bikes. We got off the boat and started to ride
counterclockwise around the island, as indicated on the bike trail info. At this early time it was rather peaceful and
we were only passed or passed a few riders.
About half way around we took the trail up the backside of the island to
from British Landing. You have to wonder
why the Fort was built where it was, because the British attacked by landing on
the other side of the island, going through the forest, and then attacking
downhill on a very vulnerable position.
We ended up riding over 15 miles today, basically covering all the paved
roads and some of the gravel trail too.
The most challenging aspect of the ride, is avoiding horse patties and
meandering people. The island has no
cars, so bikes and horse drawn carriages
are the mode of transportation. There
are multi-passenger carriages that haul lots of people behind 3 sturdy draft
horses, and then small carriages that you can rent on your own to drive around
the island with just one horse. Bikes of
all kinds are available for rent. We ate
lunch at the Grand Hotel, which still claims to have the largest porch in the
USA. Have you figured out where we are
today? Mackinaw Island Michigan, with
our campsite on the Upper Peninsula in St Ignace.
